Thank you for your "error," Tom. Sorry that I am again slow picking up on your rating and comment. Your "advisories" somehow seem to slip by unremarked by the Epinions mechanisms.

Reading over this review, I suppose you are right. It may not be the review someone who knows nothing about The Maltese Falcon, novel or movie, would relish. I've tried to explain the review's origins, but that is really no excuse.

Put it down to indulgence. And to a desire to share some not obvious knowledge about perhaps the most influential of Private Eye pictures.

I look forward to, someday, winning one of your coveted Most Helpful designations.

Thank you again.

I am unsure of the need to leave this comment . . .so I will err on the side of doing just that.

A wonderful review, the rates already attest to that. But is it the first review that the ephemeral customer wants to see to find out the basics about The Maltese Falcon..??

Somehow I think not. Hence the rate.

I am reading through the dozen or so of these reviews right now. They are all ( well, almost... ) wonderful reviews. As is yours.

Do not attach more value to my rate than does Epinions. It should mean nothing to you. But it must mean everything to me.

I need the IMBd, Maurice!

But I do know a few things not found in that invaluable online reference work.

Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Thank you, Suzanne. I'm glad that the write-off on favorite directors was offered, even though when it fell through, it took me time to figure out how to adapt the text I had written to stand alone.

Without the W/O, I might not done an epinion on THE MALTESE FALCON.

Glad you liked it.

Dear Stephen: I suppose I was reacting to a small cabal of "users" on the IMDb page for THE MALTESE FALCON. If you are indefatigable, and I know you are, you will find such as perfectbond, dogspit, lucy-66, bucsl960, and Guy Shurmer (guy-72), who make nasty comments there about Miss Astor's appearance and performance.

Understand, it is not my opinion, as I indicate. I'm with David Thomson, who considers Mary Astor a fine actress, who was also a very intelligent woman.

Let me know if you rattle those guys teeth, and I will go back and do a job on them, too.

Thank you for your comment, Stephen.

Who (Reply to this comment)
by Stephen_Murray, Stephen_Murray is an Advisor on Epinions in Movies
thinks Mary Astor was too old? Her character is supposed to have been around. She was 6 years younger than Bogart. And her best comedy role was still a year ahead (Pal Beach Story, naturally).

I remember seeing the flick years and years ago, and I thoroughly enjoyed this essay. It is very interesting to learn more about John Huston, Orson Wells and Humphrey Bogart, along with the others in that(my) time frame. Thanks for an enjoyable read.
