Re: the tale fairy (Reply to this comment)

Hey Brian!
Hmmm... I'd never thought of Shrek as a modern fairytale, I suppose because it's set in a medieval surrounding... but you're right. And the sequel (okay maybe it's already out in the States but we're still waiting here in Third World Britain) even looks like it has the potential to be good, too...
Will check out the other film you've mentioned, too.
Cheers!

Excellent review of a film I too love. It is, as you say, sweet and silly and generous, and the music is indeed terrific.
As for modern fairytales, there are some - the comic-book-inspired genre is arguably full of them (I was quite fond of Mystery Men), and I reviewed a strange little movie called the Price of Milk that certainly qualifies. Rip the many layers of irony away from Shrek and you even have a very strong, original, surprisingly sweet fairy tale there too. Which doesn't make Mannequin any less worth celebrating.
cheers,
- Brian

Hey Chris!
Me too - I hate movies that feel like a long sit-com ... but for whatever reason, this movie doesn't feel that way to me.
Thanks for the comment!

The thing is, I can so see why people wouldn't like this film - but I still love it! I watch it when I'm in a silly mood, which I suppose says something... :-D

movies. It's a no-brainer kind of comedy and as harmless as a t.v. sitcom. I hate movies that are long sit-coms. I don't know why anyone would embrace the film, but you wrote a good thorough review.
Nice job.

While this is not one of my favorite films, I just love the performance by GW Bailey. His over-the-top antics always crack me up and they are here in abundance. Good job.

I Hate This Film... (Reply to this comment)

Your review is excellent but I so did not like this film. It was too cheesy. Plus, I can't get used to see James Spader playing some nerdy, Ed Grimley-type of character. He was so wrong for that. Thankfully, he's got the Infamous Indie-Sex Trilogy of his and other films and "The Practice" to be remembered. I was happy he got his revenge when he punches Andrew McCarthy in "Less Than Zero". No one punches Mr. Grey!
