Very Good . . . (Reply to this comment)

George, this is one of your best reviews, I think. You climb every mast. You might be interested in getting hold of the old laserdisc (or the new DVD) of Huston's MOBY DICK. On the laserdisc, at least, the true genius of the Huston/Morris color film design is restored. By keeping Ahab often in shadow, Peck's eloquent voice is concentrated upon, and his performance seems 200% better than in the standard color print which was substituted for Huston's shortly after the film's release.

Regards.

"Aye, Epinions, she beckons..."

Great job, George. One of my favorite films (I guess you've seen the remake from the late 1990s with Patrick Stewart as the Captain and a cameo by Gregory Peck as the minister). In the version you reviewed, I never saw that version until the 1970s on TV as a teenager --- it was such a shock to see Richard Basehart in the film (up to that age, I knew him only as Admiral Nelson on the TV version of "Voyage To The Bottom Of The Sea").

Don :)

Susi, Anybody who has seen as many Godzilla movies as you have could not be abashed by a mere whale. Just kidding! You would enjoy the movie. The book is a kinda hard read with lotsa detail, if you like that sort of thing. Thanks for stopping by and leaving a comment.

I'm embarrassed to admit I've caught neither the movie nor the book, much to my detriment.

I'm sorely tempted to watch now, you have given such high regard to it and I do admire Houston.

Thanks
Susi

I was required to read "Billy Budd" rather than "Moby Dick." I just hope I don't wind up like Leonard Zelig and never find time to catch up to either the book or the film. Thanks for sharing!
Sincerely, Pat
