phungus's Full Review: National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation
There have been several National Lampoon's Vacation movies, but this one is by far the funniest. The only other Christmas movie to hold a candle to it is A Christmas Story.
Chevy Chase and Beverly D'Angelo stars as the Griswolds, and Clark Griswold (Chevy), is doing his best to make this Christmas the biggest and best one yet. He starts by finding the biggest tree he can and attempting to set it up in his house. Of course, Murphy's Law kicks in and chaos ensues. Next, Clark decides to cover his entire house with Christmas lights. Again, problems, but it eventually works.
While all this is going on, all the in-laws show up, as well as a cousin and his family. This cousin, Randy Quaid, is redneck with a capital R E D N E C K. He drives a huge nasty motor home and talks more trash than a presidential candidate. However, he is a simple honest man and an all-around good guy.
On Christmas Eve, Clark finds out that he did not get a Christmas bonus, but instead got a year's supply of jam. "The gift that keeps on giving all year round". Clark then goes on a rampage that results in Randy Quaid kidnapping his boss and a swat team assualting the house.
Randy Quaid completely steals the show here! He has all the best lines and his "Merry Christmas, the <toilet> is full" is a classic by anyone's standards. Also look for Seinfeld's Elaine as a snobby neighbor who gets mixed up in all of the Griswold chaos.
A great spoof of the American family during the chaotic holiday season, National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation is a great family movie. Rent it tonight, it's still funny even when it's not 'the season'.
