Pros:Major Historical Event, insightful, informative.
Cons:Has the potential to turn you into a Romanov Conspiracy Theorist.
The Bottom Line: If you have even the remotest interest in Russian History, watch this.

Plot Details: This opinion reveals minor details about the movie's plot.

Any movie encompassing the fall of the Romanov Dynasty and the Russian Revolution is worth watching, if you're interested in that sort of thing. One would be wrong in assuming the two go hand in hand, but it isn't so. The tragedy and mystery surrounding the death of the Last Tsar of Russia and his family, has had historians and conspiracy theorists alike in a spin for the last 80 years. Their downfall was bought about by war and the onset of the revolution, but the two are completely separate issues if taken below face value.

What I like about this movie, is the fact it is inkeeping with what it's title suggests the content refers to, "Nicholas and Alexandra". So many movies of this ilk get bogged down and sidetracked with other key issues, the revolution, of course, was a major player towards the end of the Imperial regime, but this movie doesn't deter greatly from it's main subject.

It gives the viewer an insight into the Tsar and his family's life before and during the start of the Revolution. The state of the Tsarevich's health, the influence of Rasputin, in fact, nothing is forgotten, save for a few, minor enhancements to actual historical events, the occasional minor glossing over of truth is acceptable for cinematic purposes.

But the movie is exactly as the story was, a tragedy in history, one which could have been prevented, and should never have happened, whatever your political views are. Anyone with an ounce of humanity should feel nothing but sympathy for what happened, and this movie will certainly tug at your heartstrings.

Tom Baker cast as Rasputin was daring, but thankfully it worked, he can hold a hypnotic gaze as good as any Mad Monk.

A word of warning, though. If the end of this movies stirs your Romanov/Revolution loins, there's a wealth of information, books and theories out there concerning the Death of the Romanovs, to keep you going until the Counter Revolution....
