The Omen ~ A Devilishly Lean-n-Mean III Write-off Entry

Written: Nov 20 '04 (Updated Nov 21 '04)
Pros:Love it love it love it
Cons:Bah
The Bottom Line: The Bottom Line stole my damn ceremonial daggers...

Plot Details: This opinion reveals major details about the movie's plot.

One of the scariest movies in history, in my humble opinion, is Donner's 1976 The Omen. I love this one so much that I watch it every year at Halloween... and often in between.

This is the story of Damien. You see, an ambassador and his wife are living the good life... until weird things start happenin' and they eventually discover that their son Damien is actually the Antichrist. That would be enough to ruin my day, I'm tellin ya.

Gregory Peck plays the dad in this, after the role was turned down by Charlton Heston, Roy Scheider and William Holden. Peck was the smart one. This has a rather large cult following these days.

Lee Remick was wonderful as the distraught mother of the little beast. She does frightened really, really well.. which makes me wonder why she was relegated to TV diva. I dunno. I liked her. She shoulda gotten more big screen roles.

Wrong? What could be wrong with our child, Robert? We're beautiful people, aren't we?

Harvey Stephens is the devil himself, Damien. Now I gotta say the little ankle-biter did a marvelous job at looking both innocent and diabolical, so it's rather funny to note that he all but disappeared until 1993 when he played a casting assistant in I Killed My Lesbian Wife, Hung Her on a Meat Hook, and Now I Have a Three-Picture Deal at Disney. I have to find that flick!

The real star of this though is that rottweiller. Man that was one ominous dog. I think this movie boosted the popularity of that breed. I know I bought one! heh.

There are some serious jump moments here, and lots of kinda slow cringes with the hair on your back prickling (like the nanny going off the roof.. oooh). The whole thing is just a piece of Horror perfection, clear down to the sweeping shots of Surrey in the UK.

Rated R in the US for scariness, I guess. I can't find the reasons but I'm telling you I let Azure watch it at around 5 and she's a relatively well adjusted 23 year old now.. I think....

This one is Five stars and should be in everyone's horror collection.
