Opinion Summary
Beyond the Call of Duty: Only the Valiant
by George_Chabot | Aug 27 '01
Pros: This is one of the most complex and enjoyable Westerns you will ever see.
Cons: Only that there are so few like this one. Strong violence limits kiddie appeal.

And I thought I was the only one who was a fan of this great movie. I have seen interviews with Gregory Peck in which he called this one of the worst films he ever appeared in---he was a better actor than critic!

I would only add about the movie that I see it as a study of the art of leadership, specifically the kind of leadership taught at West Point, where you are a man of integrity, or you are kicked out.

Also, the men Lance chose for the Fort Invincible expedition were not chosen because they hated him, but because he wanted Fort Winston defended by its best men, if attacked. He wanted to remove the malcontents from that scene of action.

Otherwise, excellent review.

Hi Stephen,

This is a 1951 release and is a powerful Western, don't know why it slipped my mind. I know you and I discussed Jimmy Stewart in Winchester '73 and Coop in High Noon, Wayne in The Searchers, and Peck hisself in The Gunfighter as regards bringing the Western into the more complex '50s. This one is equal to or better than any of em. Peck, like a lot of actors, became complacent imho after achieving a little box office clout.

Best regards,

George

Westerns are the tops. I'll have to find this one for his b-day in October along with the other fine westerns you've put your stamp of approval on!

Great 'e'

For a movie this obscure, (Reply to this comment)

year of release would be helpful information. Of course, I could look it up, but I'll conserve the energy to expend it on looking for the movie! Which is my way of saying "Intriguing review" in case "Most helpful" didn't already signal that...

Don't go overboard with the recommendations, George. I can only stand the atypical western about once a year. :-)
