I was conned by the star power into seeing this film when it was released in theaters. Man, O Manishevitz, what a mistake that was! Sitting through this film gave me ample time to reflect on my life up until that point because it was all I could do just to stay in my seat. I found myself discovering religion while watching this film because I prayed for it to end many times. I found myself abandoning religion when each time, the film kept right on going. I can easily say that with the possible exception of high school and college graduations I've sat through, this was the most boring, mind numbing three hours of my life. I feel I am owed a time-refund somewhere along the line in the grand design.
The film tells the story of some woman with a title and a coffee farm and not much else who goes to "OOfrica" to try to grow coffee. Somewhere along the line she meets Robert Redford and they wind up together. There! I have just saved you three precious hours of your life. No thanks necessary...just send cash. (Just kidding.)
I was going out with someone from Vassar, Streep's old school, at the time this movie came out. Streep's OWN SCHOOL published a review of this film titled "I Bought the Farm In OOfrica" (In the film she keeps saying "I had a farm in OOfrica." It's supposed to be 'Africa', but she's Danish or something.) The title of the review the Vassar paper wrote sums things up perfectly.
