Koller misses the point (Reply to this comment)
by espoon
Out of the Past is among the finest examples of film noir ever made. Koller's faulting the movie for its supposed lack of character definition ignores the subtlety involved. Robert Mitchum's brilliant acting, subtle facial expressions, and nuanced mannerisms tell enough about his character and motivations, without resorting to development through pointless dialog. Kirk Douglas's wanting Jane Greer back is obvious; he loves her, and he knows (or thinks) that he can control her. His statement that he doesn't want the money back is an obvious lie, told to Mitchum so he will help find her. Greer's seeming vacillation in loyalty is obvious too--she's a femme fatale, and she quickly changes allegiance when it suits her. The characters all make sense, even the deaf-mute with the fishing rod (ok, that was a little much).

I've never read the novel. It's been years since I've read any novel. The call of the VCR, as Jack London wouldn't put it.
