Plot Details: This opinion reveals major details about the movie's plot.
Once upon a time a really mean spirited and spoiled rotten rich chick hired a poor but very cute carpenter to install cabinets in her closet on her yacht. The two hated each other. That is, until she falls Overboard and loses her memory...
That chick is played by Goldie Hawn who is just too cute for words. I was actually quite surprised at how well she was able to separate the character between rich snob and poor amnesiac. Excellent, and funny as all hell. I particularly liked the scene where she waltzes in and gives a school teacher hell. heh.
The carpenter is played by her long-time real life partner Kurt Russell. Well, Russell hears of the broad washed ashore and realizes right away who it is and decides to claim her for a bit of fun and pay back. I'm not really a Russell fan, but I have to admit that he looked mighty fine in them tight pants and flannel shirts. Very macho indeed. The chemistry between him and Hawn was palpable, which is only right given their off-screen relationship.
The story may be very predictable, but that doesn't matter a bit because the route it takes getting to the way we know it will end is a blast to watch. Are the two ends of the financial spectrum cliched and stereotypical? Well yeah they are... but they're actually taken to the next level of absurdity to wonderful effect.
You know what your problem is?, You are so god damn bored you have to invent things to bitch about. You don't have a single thing to do on this earth except for your hair, the closet was fine, you just needed something to fill up your useless, nail polishing, toe polishing, rich bitch, sun tanning days!
Now, while I usually watch movies for entertainment value only, I have to admit I had to give a nod and a smile to this one for making a very clear and valid point amidst all the comedy: there really is more to life than acquiring stuff. That's a lesson a few more folks need to learn. Kudos to Director Garry Marshall for that.
Rated Pg for mild language. I see no reason not to let the kids watch this. The worst that will happen is a few giggles and snickers.
Gotta go with a high 4 stars on this one and recommend it to comedy buffs 'round the world. It may be almost 20 years old (1987), but it still holds up well in 2004.
