Lets say some cute little fairy swooped down from the heavens, waved her wand and gave you the ability to change something in your past. What would you change? Now Im not talking about knowing what stocks to buy or what teams to bet on. Im talking about personal relationships. Peggy Sue Got Married (1986) is a film that is more than likely going to pose that question in your mind. It did in mine. If I had known then what I know now.....
Lets start out with the story itself. Peggy Sue Kelcher Bodell is going to her 25th high school reunion. Her companion for the event is not her husband, as would be normal, but her daughter. Thats because Peggy Sue and her husband, Charlie, are in the middle of a divorce. As she explains to her best friend, We got married too young and started blaming each other for all the things wed missed.
When Charlie arrives at the reunion later in the evening, this puts Peggy Sue into an emotional tailspin. As she is being crowned Queen, listening to the applause and the people singing for her, Peggy collapses. It takes a bit of time after she awakes for Peggy to realize that somehow shes traveled through a time-warp of sorts.
Once again its 1960 and shes back in high school. Shes been given a second chance in life to mend some of what she considers her mistakes. Will she marry Charlie, aka Mr. Blue Impala, all over again, knowing that he will be a cheater and break her heart? Or will she accept the marriage proposal of another young man....one that she knows will ultimately become rich and famous? And then theres the only guy I wished Id slept with in the picture. Three choices, three decisions.
Peggy Sue Got Married is an interesting film to watch if you enjoy seeing actors in some of their earliest performances. The cast boasts of some folks that have gone a long way since the release of this film. The list includes Nicholas Cage, Kathleen Turner, Jim Carrey, Helen Hunt, and Joan Allen.
Sofia Coppola plays the role of Peggy Sues younger sister, Nancy. Her performance left a lot to be desired, just as the one she played in the Godfather III as the daughter of Don Corleone. But thats alright....this young lady has already being noticed for her directing skills (The Virgin Suicides, Lost In Translation), just like her dear old Dad, Francis Coppola, who directed this film.
And I just have to mention the absolutely wonderful Maureen OSullivan, as Peggy Sues Grandmother. Yea, you know Maureen....she was Tarzans beloved Jane back in the 30s. So obviously, this one doesnt fit into one of the earliest performances, but its nice to watch this lovely woman once again.
One of the things that appealed to me most about Peggy Sue Got Married was the authenticity of the scenes that were supposedly from the year 1960. From the vintage cars and the clothes, to the turntable for playing records and the console television and of course, the wonderful music....they all suited the timeframe perfectly. Even such things as aromas were brought out. Like when Peggy Sue first enters her home and her Mom gives her a hug. She breaths in deeply and says Ahhh, Chanel #5 always reminded me of home. Its those little things that take us back...
Both the first and the last scenes of Peggy Sue Got Married are shot with the characters in a mirror. Simple reflections. Reflections of ourselves and of the choices weve made. So back to that original question. And for a twist, if a change would mean the existence of your children, would it be worth it? For me personally, I know the resounding answer to that is absolutely not. So what would you change? If I had known then what I know now.....
Peggy Sue Got Married is rated PG13 and runs 104 minutes.
