Re: I don't know how I've missed your review on this until now... (Reply to this comment)
by AliventiAsylum, in Movies
I was just talking yesterday with someone about the "old" Star Wars vs. the "new" Star Wars. He was saying that there's just "something" missing from a lot of the new ones. I think a lot of it has to do with overuse of CGI, but there are also problems with too many coincidences, such as the Jango-Boba Fett connection to the Empire; why doesn't Darth Vader recognize the droids or at least C3PO when he sees them again; the Tatooine connection as well as Uncle Owen, Aunt Beru - there are just so many thing that feel like they are trying to force such a connection in a galaxy with hundreds (if not thousands) of inhabited planets.
This was definitely my favorite of all the films. Lucas' additions really don't bother me cause they don't do too much to the story overall. They will never be able to recreate the awe that came about with the first three films - they were something we hadn't seen before. However, the point was the effects helped tell a story, rather than a story helping to show off what great effects they can now do.
Thanks for the comment as always :-)

I don't know how I've missed your review on this until now... (Reply to this comment)
by JediKermit
But that's rectified I suppose.
I (of course) LOVE Return of the Jedi. Saw it when I was ten, and for a long time it was my favorite. Lucas' futzing with adding digital characters to Jabba's Palace and some other scenes really bugs me. The only addition I really like is the addition of the Bantha herd in the desert.
I do think the climactic scenes of the space battle outside Death Star II are the best space battle yet seen on film (and goodness knows we've seen our share of space battles, eh?)...I had high hopes for the prequels space battles, but we've seen nothing that even approaches that masterpiece.
I also agree with you about the camaraderie displayed in this film--something the Original Trilogy has done so much better than the new movies. I love (like you said) that the heroes are together for the bulk of this flick. You believe that they would all descend into the pits of hell to rescue Han. You believe they would put everything else on Endor on hold until they find Leia. You know they'd give up everything for their friends. You don't get that in the prequels. The relationship between Obi-Wan, Anakin and Padme is non-existent, and the droids just happen to be along. So sad.
Yeah, "Jedi" rocks. And Emperor Palpatine is darn sexy.

Ugh! Now you've just raised a whole host of questions that I have 2 1/2 more years to think about! Oh well, at least I won't be sitting in a lunchroom with arguments breaking out...

Ahh, but now the biggest arguments are "Who the hell is Sifo-Dyas?" Some people think it's Qui-Gon Jinn, others think it was just some Jedi that got knocked off and then Dooku ordered the clones under Sifo-Dyas' name. I for one don't know how an order that big gets placed without the person at least showing up in person to sign for it or something! It's all so weird...
Then I saw one person today that said what if Naboo IS Dagobah. Wouldn't that be somethin'!

That's the "new" subtitle for the first Star Wars movie released in 1977. It does make it confusing, doesn't it?

I hate just the CGI by itself - like you I agree it looks too cartoonish. I am hoping that the special effects people realize people don't like it and swing back to more of the combination models/CGI that we see here.
Sends Lando in, sends the droids in, sends Leia with Chewie in, Luke comes in. Just see what develops from there? Still can't figure out the actual plot there. Heck, it was fun though :-)

the beginning... (Reply to this comment)
by firstcontact21
of the film, I think the reason why they went a few at a time was because they all agreed that Jabba must come down.
And all the henchmen and baddies that hung out with him would probably have been too much for a lone Jedi who has just discovered his powers to handle... so why not send all the help you need in early, one guy at a time?
Also, I agree - this film had the best use of FX of all of them. I personally prefer a mix of models and CGI, CGI by itself just looks cartoonish - there is a sheen to it that looks like it was done on a computer. At least with models, it's something solid, it's there, and it looks real. I think the first few seasons of Star Trek: Voyager and Star Trek: First Contact illustrate this the best - both used a mix of models and CGI and they looked great.
Cheers,
- Steve =)

Thanks for the congrats!
And I think Ewoks are cute. Hey, I don't think a Wookie would've been able to cut it in a hang-glider. Probably would have dropped like a Lead Zeppelin. Hmmm.....

LOL! I'd believe it. I can distinctly remember those arguments we'd have over whether or not Darth Vader was really Luke's father. Man, were they something!

Re: Quotable Quotes (Reply to this comment)

What helped was really just how UNKNOWN these actors were before Star Wars. Even Sir Alec Guiness wasn't that well-known among American audiences.
But I have heard they signed up for three movies right away - wonder if that's true?

Well, if you watch the first three, the story in the last two is really disappointing. It feels like Lucas is trying too hard to make it all fit. Not that they're bad, but there's something in the original trilogy that's definitely missing.

And I understand that some people don't like the Ewoks. But hey, all aliens can't be menacing - why can't one batch be cute and fuzzy?

...on your 350th review!
When I was in high school, I had some wacky friends who formed a "Defrost Han" Society while waiting for Return of the Jedi to come out. I think they might've actually made it into the yearbook as an official club...
Great review, as usual--

Quotable Quotes (Reply to this comment)
by flamepillar
I love what Han says back to Luke after he asks Luke how he is and Luke says "Same as always." Then Han goes, "That bad, huh?" LOL great stuff. And THANK GOD they were able to hold on to all the original actors through three entire movies! Nowadays you're lucky if you see the same actors in two of a series.
