....all time favourite westerns which seems to crop up on cable up here every couple of months (and yes I almost always catch it). I wasn't aware of the political context in which it was made. Thanks for the info.

I had never realized the connection with the red witch hunt and it makes this marvelous picture even more exciting. Those were dark days, but guess I was too young to really absorb what was going on. And you're right! We are continually being reminded of them - but then, maybe we'd be smart enough to not go along with it should anything like that come up again@

Hi Jude!
You are too kind. I just reflected on some of my recent viewings and tried to put a little historical context in with the film review. I think it's interesting to find out what was going on when a particular film came out. Like rock 'n' roll: watching the movie and seeing Ricky Nelson many people would not realize he was put in there because rock 'n' roll was the latest craze, but in 1959 it was. Those filmmakers weren't so dumb!
