Rio Bravo was one of John Wayne's best movies. This movie has it all for the western lover. The casting alone should win an Oscar, if we could go back that far. What is not to love with people like, Ward Bond, Dean Martin, Walter Brennan, Ricky Nelson.
Who would have thought that little Ricky Nelson could act. He wasn't bad in this one. In fact, he seem to fit right in, and in a western to boot.
As good as Wayne is in his movies, we've got to give some credit to Dean Martin. True he was noted for his drinking, (which was never proven in reality) but he played the perfect reformer. When he got the shakes and lost his temper, we could feel the magnetism in the movie. He deserves some recognition for pulling this one off.
Angie Dickinson did a rather great job of playing the misfit dance-hall girl too. Young and beautiful and a strange but alluring match for Wayne.
Claude Akins did a believable job as the bad guy.
And I'd like to salute an ole character that I felt seldom got his due, Walter Brennan. No one could have played Stumpy better.
A true Wayne flick of Good triumphing over evil. And no one does it better or more believable than John Wayne, King of Westerns.
