A fast-paced and accurate look at the sinking of the Unsinkable. A great cast headed by David Janssen (as J.J. -- watch the film to learn what the initials mean) and Cloris Leachman (as Molly Brown, the other Unsinkable, who really was!), as well as very good special effects (watch the water fill the hold and the stokers run from it) create a truly wonderful mood of yesterday. Likewise, costuming, dialogue and a certain indefinable aura made me think I was watching the real sinking! So lifelike was this film, and realistic to its subject, that it made me look around my armchair to see if the floor hadn't been submerged!
I felt cold in that North Atlantic, I can tell you! It was also a love story, with the older David (very rich American) and a new, younger bride being one focus. She was having his baby and had to part with him as her lifeboat was lowered and he stayed on the tilting deck. She got a chance to mourn him (and God) at the end. Watch also for the piano -- the band player had to keep pulling it back with his left hand to keep it from sliding off the deck as the ship listed! The young people from steerage were just like young people from steerage -- ready and apt to try new things! When they were chided by a guard for being upstairs in the 1st class dining room, the night that many of them died, I almost wanted to cry, thinking of their fate.
A good, strong film to watch. Please do.
