| GreNDeL's Full Review: Sex, Lies and Videotape |
"Sex, Lies, & Videotape" is a wonderful testament to modern love, and psychology. Steven Soderberg's directorial debut is emotionally gripping and true. Using 4 central characters, Soderberg who also wrote the film, is able to weave a realistic and intricate story portraying the betrayal of love, and the dark holes of the human psyche.
Frustrated with her present life, Ann (Andie McDowell), regularly goes to her psychiatrist to vent about problems of the modern world, and her inability to have, or even want, sex. At the same time, her lawyer husband, John (Peter Gallagher), is having an affair with her sister, Cynthia. Cynthia is the exact opposite of Ann, and is almost addicted to sex. Enter James Spader, who plays Graham, an old college buddy of John's, who has a strange affinity for women and videotapes. With his arrival the story takes a nice dark twist and suddenly Ann starts to feel as if she's not so rigid after all. I don't want to give away any important parts of the plot, so you will just have to see for yourself, what it is that makes the visiting Graham so intriguing and mysterious.
I highly recommend this movie to anyone, but fans of movies with action will be sorely dissapointed, as it is mostly great dialogue, and hardly any music in the film. But it almost seems that either of those two things would take away from the eerie feel of this very entertaining film. By the way, if you're expecting a movie along the lines of the title, you will also better pass this one and go rent "Basic Instinct", because there is hardly any nudity in the film, although there are alot of sexual situations and content.
