The Shootist is not a typical Wayne western, it's a honest to goodness goodbye to his fans, played out in a western atmosphere. There's nothing normal about this movie except it's all Wayne. Ron Howard is saluting the King of Westerns.
In some ways it's sad, and in others it's almost like a biography in that it opens with Wayne's earlier flicks showing, and slowly progresses to old age. It's a film that had to be made, anyone can see that. We have all seen the westerns where the hero cowboy gets his horse or girl. But until The Shootist we never lived out their lives. We never saw what happened to the lawman who was hunted by every fast gun in the west. We never saw his pain and agony until The Shootist. This completes the death of Wayne himself and his illustrious life on the screen.
So if you are a Wayne fan, you will laugh, cry, and say a sad farewell to a man that personifies the word "Man".
In their faces we see the emotions being played out, and we wonder if they aren't real. Perhaps it isn't the best western in history, but it is a lasting tribute to a cowboy.
And we must give credit to Richard Boone, whose role was minor, but well acted, Hugh O'Brien in great form, Jimmy Stewart, Lauren Bacall and of course, Ron Howard. He's come a long way since Opie!
