What happens when you take: an innocent high school sophomore; a cool but charming jock; his beer drinking friends; a Chinese exchange student with the name like Long Duck Dong, who would rather spell his food, then eat it; a couple of geeks and their leader; and the few hot senior babes. What does that spell? 'SIXTEEN CANDLES'.
Molly Ringwald (Breakfast Club, Pretty in Pink), who portrays a high school sophomore Sam on her sixteen-year-old birthday, plays the main character. She is in love with Jake, who is one of the most popular guys in the school, senior and the jock. She is very embarrassed about him ever finding that out, as high school girls are, because Jake is involved with the hottest girl in school. But there is also a freshman, played by Anthony Michael Hall (Breakfast Club, Weird Science). He wants to try to score with Ringwald, by putting various freshmen moves on her. Probably one of the funniest roles that he played in his career and as he grew up, he has lost his acting capabilities. He has a few friends, who as he calls them are dipshits, always trying to catch him on the lie about his ventures as a Casanova wonna be. 'Sophomore, I am telling bro. Sophomore!'
Samantha's sister is getting married and everyone forgets that it is Molly's birthday. All the grand parents are coming for the wedding and that is where the real fun starts to happen. One of her grandfathers has this exchange student living with him and they bring him along for the wedding. Every time I hear Long Duck Dong, when we talk about the movie, I hear those cymbals in the background. Sam has to go to the dance and her grandparents suggest that she takes the young Donger with her. There are other things that happen and the ending is happy.
The acting is great, the plot is perfect and the characters and interactions between them are hilarious. Yes it is a teen flick and I know it has been around for a long time, but today we were talking about it and I couldn't stop laughing. A definite must see.
