I sat and pondered in my mind for weeks when Melissa(Bops Mom) had asked me if I would like to participate in the Favorite Comedy Movie Write Off..Low and behold I took the invitation. I had two movies in mind, one being The Last America Virgin and the one I am chosing Sixteen Candles.
Sixteen Candles is, of course, a movie from the 80's-1984 to be exact. It was directed by John Hughes who has directed movies such as Pretty In Pink, The Breakfast Club, and , all the Home Alone Movies (1-3). The cast of Sixteen Candles is composed of actors we rarely see much of anymore such as Molly Ringwald,
John Cusak, and Anthony Michael Hall.
Sixteen Candles is about a girl named Samantha Baker (Molly Ringwald), who is 15 and her life is starting to fall apart. To add icing to the cake, her family forgets her 16th birthday because they are so occupied with her sisters wedding. Samantha has a crush on Jake Ryan (Michael Schoeffling) who is the most popular boy in school. In return the biggest geek, Farmer Ted ( Anthony Michael Hall), has a crush on her.
Samantha Bakers sister is getting married and the family has relatives in town. Her grandparents end up taking over her room and they are just so embarrassing. They brought an exchange student along with them named Long Duc Dong and Samantha has to show this kid around. He is such a geek. Though he does end up falling in love before Samantha does.
Farmer Ted really has a crush on Samantha and he knows the she has a crush on Jake. Samantha trusted Farmer Ted and leant him a pair of her underwear to make his friends think he scored. His friends are just as, if not more geeker than Farmer Ted himself. His friend, Bryce (John Cusak) is a site to see. He wears head gear and braces. You will laugh seeing John Cusak like this. Any way, Farmer Ted ends up displaying her underwear in the bathroom at the school dance.
Next there is a party at Jake Ryans house and his girlfriend is just so drunk and acting stupid. Jake had learnt earlier through a letter that Samantha has a crush on him. Jake starts questioning Ted about Samantha. From that point on you know what the ending will be. Jake sends Ted to take his girlfriend home. So here you have Farmer Ted using Jakes dads Rolls Royce. He drives by his geek friends house to let them take pictures. In the meantime, Jake is trying to contact Samantha and her grandparents think he is preditor on the phone and no contact is made.
Finally, the family realizes that have forgotten Samanthas birthday and all begin to tell her. She goes to her sisters wedding and at the end of the wedding is the lead to my favorite part. Jake Ryan is outside waiting on Samantha. He flags her over and she is just in disbelief. He takes her back to his house and has a birthday cake for her. They are sitting on the table and Jake tells Samantha to make a wish. She says it already came true ( of course meaning she is with him) and they kiss.
This movie is just so funny. Filled with many moments that will have you cracking up. Though it is old, I seen it first when I was 11 when it first came out and 16 years later, it is still one of my favorites.
