Pros:John Ritter
Cons:just an average movie
The Bottom Line: If you are a John Ritter fan you might want to see Skin Deep. Otherwise, I'd pass on it.

Plot Details: This opinion reveals major details about the movie's plot.

I am a huge fan of John Ritter. I was crushed when I found out that he had passed away last September. Recently, I got this idea that I wanted to start collecting movies that he had played in. I was able to find the movie Skin Deep at a used store that I frequently visit. I’m hadn't seen John play this type of role before. I was used to seeing John in roles such as the preacher on the Waltons, the lovable Jack Tripper on Three’s Company, a dad in Problem Child and a preacher in Man of Miracles. I guess that’s what you call a good actor though, one that can play any part.

The Movie:

Zach Hutton’s wife, Alexandra, leaves him after she finds out that he has been unfaithful. He can’t control his urge for sex and moves from woman to woman. He also can’t control his urge to drink and finds himself drunk anytime he gets the chance. The women are plentiful and the booze flows freely. There are many scenes with Zach talking to his bartender buddy, Barney. There are also various scenes of Zach talking with his psychiatrist. Zach learns that Alexandra is planning on getting re-married and crashes her wedding. How does Alexandra react when he makes a scene at the wedding? Will Zach ever change his ways of womanizing and drinking? Does he ever get back together with Alexandra or does he finally decide to let her go?

The Cast:

John Ritter – Zach
Alyson Reed – Alex
Vincent Gardenia – Barney
Joel Brooks – Jake
Julianne Phillips – Molly
Chelsea Field – Amy
Peter Donat – Sparky
Nina Foch – Alex’s Mother
Michael Kidd – Dr. Westford

The cast list is much longer, but the ones who were seen the most are listed above.

Rated: R
Color
102 Minutes

My Thoughts:

This movie was just average. This best part for me was that John Ritter was in it. I didn't think he looked his best though because he had his full beard which I can’t stand. It was really hard for me to get used to seeing John do sexual scenes. It was weird watching him play someone who was drunk. I’m just not used to watching him in these types of roles so it took some getting used to for me.

There were a couple of funny parts in the movie. There was one point where I found myself laughing before I even realized it. There was a scene where an ex-lover did something very revengeful to him. I thought what followed was pretty funny. There was also a funny scene that was about a glow in the dark condom.

I thought the cast did a good job with their acting. This movie came out in 1990 and I have to say that the picture wasn’t that great. Things have dramatically changed since then and you can tell the improvement in watching movies today than older ones. The sound was just average.

I don’t think any children should watch this movie. It is rated R due to the nudity, sexual scenes and bad language. It deals with adult topics and is not something that any child should watch.

If you are a big John Ritter fan like I am I would recommend that you watch this movie if you haven’t seen it before. If you aren’t a huge John Ritter fan I’d recommend that you pass on it.
