Sleuth is an unusual movie. It is a two man show, starring Laurence Olivier and Michael Caine. It is it film with a lot of dialogue, and very little action. In all these ways it is out of the ordinary.
Sleuth is a great film for fans of puzzles and mysteries. The plot centers around two men, one is sleeping with the other's wife. They begin to hatch a scheme that is beneficial to both, and of course they both plan to doublecross the other. That is as much plot detail as can be revealed without destroying any chance of enjoying this wonderful little film. Suffice it to say that the viewer is kept guessing right up until the end.
Caine and Olivier both give powerful performances. This is, in fact, the film that made critics begin to notice Michael Caine.
This film belongs on a short list of "puzzle" films. Great films like The Last Of Sheila would also be on this list.
Sleuth is a true classic.
