Cinematic and adaptations of biblical themes have sense regained their popularity on the big screen and television. I remember such outstanding releases as The Ten Commandments, a spectacular work by Cecil B. DeMile, "Samson and Delihla", "Ben Hur", and "The Robe" those movies were great because of their unsophisticated special effects that worked quite well, and brilliant colorful cinematography, that attracted audiences. Some of these films came with a good premise, but some were too long, and eventually lost the viewers interest.
Today you can pretty much see these legendary movies on TBN (Trinity Broadcasting Network) some are good, but their remakes are badly made. In this 1963 release of "Sodom Gomorrah" lead actor Stewart Granger delivers a strong acting role as the infamous biblical character Lot, a man sent to a corrupt city to save the Hebrew slaves, and anyone who wish to escape Gods judgement on the city of Sodom and Gomorrah. "Sodom and Gomorrah" not only delivers a good body of cast members, and genuine acting from its cast, but it also offers special effects that manage to work quite well despite its limited use of advanced technology in cinema as we know it today.
"Sodom Gomorrah" is the story of Lot, a man who led the Hebrew tribe of Abraham to the city of Sodom and Gomorrah by unusual circumstances. Sodom and Gomorrah is a city of riches, corruption, and sin. The city is lead by a morally corrupted Queen and her brother. Moreover, the two are spellbound with jealously and rivalry between them. As a result, the Queens brother conjures up a scheme to kill her so he could take over the throne. Meanwhile, the city of Sodom and Gomorrah falls prey to a hostile take over, and occupation by the King of the Hellamites. Later things change when the King of the Hellamites and the Queens brother meet and discover the Hebrew slaves in Sodom and Gomorrah and Lots mission to free them at Gods command.
Lot ends the journey of his tribe when they find land and meet the Queen. The Queen promise Lot that he and his tribe can occupy the land for ten years, on the condition that Lot must fight to keep their land. Later, the invading armies of the Hellamites, and their King draws close to Lots newly occupied land for a hostile take over, and war begins on the wedding day of Lot. After the defeat of the Sodomites, and the Hellamites Lot and his tribe are invited to live in the city of Sodom and Gomorrah. As this story goes on we discover that things have taken a turn for the worst when Lot discovers that the Queens brother have corrupted his daughters, and as a result, Lot kills the Queens brother. Lot is sentenced to life in jail.
While in jail Lot prays for forgiveness, wisdom, and direction from God. God hears him, and strange occurrences begin to occur when two angels appear at his door and tell him of Gods intention to destroy Sodom and Gomorrah because of its wickedness. The angels instruct Lot to warn the people of Gods intention to destroy their city, and the immediate life saving evacuation of people.
If you enjoy movies with a biblical theme than this original classic will delight you. While I found this film to be overall very enjoyable I found the script to contain a few flows. For instance, there were a few inadequate events that occurred in the movie that doesnt coincide with the actual events in the bible. The true story of Lots final escape from jail is omitted. Hugo Butler, and Giogio Prosperi wrote the script for this motion picture, and they leave out who really met Lot at his cell, and why.
However, audiences can look forward to an entertaining movie that maintains a good premise, and an applicable biblical theme of heroism, corruption, and endurance. "Sodom and Gomorrah" delivers spectacular action scenes, good acting, and direction by Robert Aldrich along with an outstanding performance by lead actor Steward Granger. The most noted scene of Stewarts his brilliant dramatization of a most heart touching plea to his wife, not to look back is brilliantly cast, and most remembered.
Overall, "Sodom and Gomorrah" is a very good Classic.
