I cant believe I just watched Somewhere In Time again
Its just one of those movies I cant resist when I find it playing on any of my movie channels
Theres just something about it that fascinates and haunts me, the story of a man who sacrificed life in the present to find love in the past. This is a quote I read and noted down that had been included in the DVD
I use it because it describes the movie to a T.
It all begins when Richard Collier, (Christopher Reeve), a successful writer in Chicago, celebrating the successful run of his new play, receives a strange visit from a lovely older woman
She calls him Richard, looks at him longingly and gives him an old fashioned pocket watch, she then says, Come back to me
What does she mean by that, he wonders
..From that moment on his life is drastically changed forever.
He is haunted by her, bewitched by the thought of her and cant seem to be interested in anything going on in his life around him
One day he takes a long drive and winds up at beautiful old hotel
The Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island. As if guided by an unknown force he goes into the hotel and decides to stay there overnight. That evening, while looking around the hotel, he finds a special room, with photos and memorabilia on display from many years past
This room is a tribute to the famous guests who had stayed there in the past, in particular, a great actress who appeared in a play back in 1912. He is mesmerized by the photograph on display of the her...staring at it endlessly. He must find out information about this woman!
He soon learns her name was Elise McKenna,(Jane Seymour), that famous actress of the time
This was the beginning of Richards strange and daring quest to find her. After much research he visits her last known home and pays a visit
when he finds out she has passed away, he is shocked and saddened, then learns that she kept alive her memories of that fateful year in her own way, with her own memories
that watch had been one of them. More research and peek into the old guest books of the hotel he finds his name registered in 1912!
He then decides to experiment with time travel after he reads a book by a man who claims to have succeeded at doing so. He must find Elise at all costs and in any way, shape or form.
Armed with this new found knowledge, he returns to the Grand Hotel and proceeds to get a room
So sure he will succeed he brought with him a suit that he thinks with blend into the fashion of the time... One of the most important aspects of successful time travel, he was told, was not to have anything of the present day with him during his actual endeavor
This bit of information plays a very important role in the outcome of the film.
I will go further in telling the story just to be able to include the lovely Jane Seymour in this review, since she is one of the two leading players in the movie
Yes, Richard is successful in his time traveling and after many tries and much concentration, he wakes up to find himself back in time...He is actually in the year 1912 at the Grand Hotel ..(at this point Id like to say I think the hotel itself was a star of this movie, there couldnt have been a better or more grand location for the shooting of this film, it just oozed atmosphere of that period of time). When he finally sees Elise for the first time the music swells, their eyes meet and both know that this meeting was meant to be
Shes not to sure at first what to think but cant take her mind off him or her eyes off him.
The chemistry between the two actors was just perfection
. Both so handsome, she, a lovely tribute to those bygone days of femininity in the costuming of that era
he, so fit, tall and good looking, they just made the most gorgeous couple
I cant help but say that watching Reeves, so strong, tall and handsome in this role, makes me sad, when I think of him during his last years, with his strength quickly fading away, but not his courage.
Of course there had to be a villain in this story, and that turned out to be Elises manager, played to the hilt by Christopher Plummer who wanted nothing but to keep them apart and tried in quite a few nefarious ways
But does he succeed? And just how does this unusual story actually play out?
I mentioned earlier that the Hotel was a star of this film and it was but so were the costumes which were nominated for an academy award
the old fashioned suit Richard wore was somewhat a joke in the story, since it was outdated for 1912 but he had no idea, until Elise told him
.all the other costumes and dresses worn evoked a feeling of the elegance of time passed and the vintage look added to the overall beauty of the movie as did the Grand Hotel.
I dont want to give the whole movie away but suffice to say there really is a twist but not before some really touching and interesting scenes in this most romantic tale of a man who falls in love with a photograph, and discovers a way to time travel so he can be with her.
I think Somewhere in Time is a most unusual film, combining science fiction and the idea of time travel with romance in such a strong way..a concept and the idea of spirits coming together, moving backwards and forwards in time
a story to remember.
This movie is based on the book Bid Time Return by Richard Matheson which received the 1976 World Fantasy Award for best novel, when it caught the attention of Hollywood executives
a short while later Jeannot Szwarc adapted the book into a screenplay and directed as well.. Szwarc, directed Jaws2 after stepping in to finish the movie after there had been some problems with that production
one of the main considerations was where to film this movie..after some thought about the Hotel Del Coronado, and the rejection of that idea, due to too many modern buildings surrounding it, the Grand Hotel was decided on because the, location, Mackinac Island, with its horse drawn carriages and step back in time look was so perfect
What a grand idea that was.
