Starman is one of my all-time favorite movies, because it is not just a science fiction film. It is a love story which teaches us about feelings and what it's like to be human.
Karen Allen (of Raiders of the Lost Ark), stars as a woman whose husband died a year or so ago in an accident. One night a strange spacecraft lands and a lifeforce of some kind invades her home and ends up finding a photo album with a lock of hair from her dead husband. This alien life force uses the DNA it finds in the hair to become human, and in a matter of minutes a baby appears, which grows into a full-grown man played by Jeff Bridges. This man looks and talks exactly like her husband did, and it scares the hell out of her.
This man, the Starman, asks the woman to take him to a place in Arizona where he can meet with his 'people' and return home. Of course, a group of scientist are chasing after them in attempts to study and capture this extra-terrestial.
On the way there, the Starman begins asking this woman about feelings, about life, what love is, etc. This movie has some really great scenes and great lines, and is as funny as it is touching. At one point he asks her "what is love" and she says "when you care more about someone else than you do for yourself". Amen to that.
This is not really an action movie and does not have any aliens shooting lasers at tanks. This is a really well-done science fiction romantic comedy drama and John Carpenter has never been able to make such a fine movie since.
