What can I say about this movie? Well it can be summed up in one word: “wow”. The main character Barry Champlain, (Eric Bogosian, a great, great actor), is an egotistical talk radio host who, every night is barraged by a wide variety of calls from the fringe of society: hate-mongers, lonely people who have the IQ of a peanut, and anyone else who is up too late with no one to talk to.
This movie is as real as it is scary, I have met those people on the other side of the phone, and through radio call shows they are allowed to make anonymous “obscene phone-calls,” (Barry’s description) bringing more attention to themselves than they would get otherwise. It is almost an addiction, all of these people trying to bait Barry, each searching for acceptance and attention for a “celebrity”, the man who controls the radio.
This movie is an experience, a ride through this man’s life, not sure what is coming next, if the threats that come over the airwaves are real or bluffs. Yet the most compelling part of this movie is not suspense, it is not “who is betraying him,” it is Barry and his legions of followers, calling out into the night, searching for a voice to talk back. The relationship between these two fringes of society is fascination: the social commentary is magnificent.
Rent this movie (or like I did, buy it), but remember to have plenty of time to watch it, this is not the type of movie you can start and stop, the experience is in the inundation of emotions, the pain, the cries in the night; Barry alone in the night, not knowing if the calls coming from the dark are a plea for help, or of danger, or which is more frightening. But whatever you do, watch this movie, it is amazing.
