Your introduction is scary (Reply to this comment)
by eplovejoy
Dear scott29,
I would never say to someone their girlfriend is ugly, so I hesitate to criticize the movie. But not for long.
You've mastered understatement with your suggestion that some of The Thing might remind one of Alien. Of course it would. Carpenter borrowed so heavily from that movie that it's more like stealing. And he created none of the claustrophobic chills of that other movie. His The Thing is more funny than scary.
It's amazing how two people can have such different takes on a movie. You're not wrong, of course, just especially generous.
Best wishes,
Peter

Glad to see the epinions community loves this movie as much as I do. Great review man, you hit all the things that made this movie great.... and that would be just about everything. By the way, there is some humor here, it's just not too prominent. MacReady pouring his drink into the computer, Palmer's response to seeing the walking head, Blair's statement that he doesn't like it out in the shack. Just subtle little bits, but you're right that most of the movie is somber and moody and just plain cool.

this on HBO recently for about the 10th time. I find that regardless of where I come in I have to keep watching. Although showing its age a bit these days, its still quite a flick!

Ok, I'll confess: I AM too scared to watch it (Reply to this comment)

But oh boy, that comment about Wilfred Whatever His Name Is being "the oatmeal cliche"...just about had me rolling in the floor laughing:). Somehow, I didn't expect to find any humor in this frightening review of an obviously ghastly movie. So when I came upon the above phrase, I nearly choked on my ice tea as I tried to stop guffawing--truly Laughing Out Loud, and then some!
Thank you for that bit of humor--and for also informing me as to exactly WHY I will NOT be renting The Thing, but will leave it for you braver souls out there:).

Funny I always thought actually OWNING a movie was a waste of money. How many times do you want to Re-watch the same damn movie.
HA!
This was the first one I OWNED. ... lol ...

Yes! This movie rules.
Dude, if you weren't already on my WOT, I'd add you now.
Is there someway to delineate an ascendant WOT?
Good job.

The Thing (Reply to this comment)

Terrific review. Is there really an alternate ending on the DVD? I can't find it on mine (unless you have a new improved copy). I'd love to see it.
"The Thing" was the first DVD I ever bought (in January 1999), and it still gets more use than most of my other discs.

Scott,
You rock man! A fantastic review on a fantastic horrifying masterpiece! You covered possibly every detail on what makes The Thing such a modern-day horror classic from John Carpenter's direction to the grotesque and indeed staggering make-up FX courtesy of Rob Bottin. This is one of my favorite horror flicks I have to watch yet again man...thanks for motivating me!
I also enjoyed reading your commentary about the DVD extras in The Thing. I plan on buying the DVD version of this flick myself. Again, I salute you for writing what is possibly the best review of The Thing yet. I trust you more than I trust Leonard Maltin. =)
Keep up the spectacular work!

Fantastic review on a fantastic movie. I have had the DVD for a while and I vastly enjoy the 80-minute documentary and the commentary. This one gets spun a lot.

Peeling the Banana Dog (Reply to this comment)

Scott,
If John Carpenter was an Epinions member and decided to try his hand at movie reviewing instead of movie-making, this would be the result. This sincere and loving critique moves forward at the same kind of pace Carpenter employs--brisk, muscular and thrilling. You snagged me with the first couple of sentences, then drove me full-throttle to the end.
And you did something else: you gave me a new appreciation for a film that I felt dispassionate about when I first saw it. Now the DVD-buying saliva is filling my mouth. Must. Have. This. One.
Bueno,
David

Good Review . . . (Reply to this comment)
by macresarf1
But I side with most of the critics on this one that the Christian Nyby 1951 version (originally attributed wholly to Howard Hawks, some said with Orson Welles involved) is vastly more subtle and skillful. Nyby, after all, was the editor of TO HAVE AND TO HAVE NOT, THE BIG SLEEP, and RED RIVER. Every cut and nuance works without throwing green goo over everyone.
Regards.

This film is one of my favorites, too, which is no small thing considering I'm the biggest John Carpenter fan on the planet. :) I plan my own review of the film in the future, but in the interim, folks, takes Scott's recommendation. See THE THING!
Best,
Joe
