Plot Details: This opinion reveals major details about the movie's plot.
I remember my parents taking me to see this back in 1986 when I was 8 (I can't believe I was ever that young now:) But, this was indeed something I understood at an early age, and it's pretty clean humor.
The movie takes place in 1916, the days of silent movies. Chase, Short and Martin are a movie act called "The Three Amigos" They get fired by their boss Joe Mintage for asking for a paycheck. I don't even know why they were working for free, but I do understand that entertainers at the beginning of the show business industry back then really didn't understand their legal rights too much. Now they won't so much as say a line without carrying their lawyer along in their front pocket. Chase says, "I'd like to continue to work for free." Idiot:)
In the meantime, a young Mexican woman and her brother are looking for some honest, tough men that will stop the fascist Mexican controller, El Gaupo. Which translates into "The Handsome", and I think my Spanish is correct there. Feel free to inform me otherwise. Anyways, they send the Amigos a telegram, and as stupid as they are, they miscommunication the whole situation thinking that shooting it out with the Mexican gangsters will be a comedy theatrical act! That is the plot of the whole movie:)
The first day, they scare off three of El Gaupeo's hoodlums, calling them "Scum sucking pigs." El Gaupeo says to his men, "Tomorrow, we will find these three gringos, open their intestines and squeeze the s--- out of them!"
It's hilarious when they come back the next day, and our three amigos "geniuses" figure out that the whole thing is for real, not an act. Martin says, "They're going to kill us!" Chase responds in a more frightened way, "What are we going to do?" Short cries, "Well were sure not going to get paid, that's for sure!" LOL El Gaupeo lets them off when he finds out about the miscommunication by saying, "El Gaupo only kills men. Not a bunch of crying women." And he rides off with the Mexican girl.
The Amigos are kicked out of the village for failure to do their jobs. They decide to go rescue the young woman, and it is a hilarious scene at El Gaupo's palace: Martin telling the Mexicans how they should have a better form of government to failing numerous times out of getting out of the tight chains! Short has to do a "draw" with the German bad guy with a gun that weighs more than the average person could pick up easily. It's funny.
They get back to Santa Poco, to warn the villagers that El Gaupo is coming back and that they need to find the bravery within themselves. As you can guess they bad guys get it and the three amigos ride off into the sunset.
I think this movie was supposed to be a spoof of 1960's westerns, and some Disney spoofs. It's a cute movie and viewable for people of all ages, everyone is sure to get a kick out of it.
