I first got this movie because I was a big fan of both Malcolm McDowell and David Warner. This movie is exciting and loads of fun, with enough blood, guts, and gore to keep a guy like me happy.
Malcolm McDowell has always been good at depicting the classic British calmness. In this, as H.G. Wells, his reaction to many of the bizarre things he sees in 1979 San Francisco is not exactly what one would call culture shock, more like awes bemusement, a sort of "Wow, cool." attitude. One good moment is when he eats at McDonalds, and examines the fiberglass table, then eats a fry and says, "Hmm, pomme frites!" David Warner is brilliant as history's most successful serial killer, Jack the Ripper. His voice is chilling, as is his calmly psychotic expressions, plus his size helps a lot, too. Mary Steenburgen is rather good as the somewhat ballsy heroine, although I would like to note that she sounds more like a New Yorker than a San Franciscan, but that's beside the point. One example of her modernity is when she seduces Wells, and, in his simple Victorian innocence, says, "I wouldn't want to take advantage of you." to which she replies, "C'mon, Henry, I'm practically raping you!" The plot, at first look, seems rather cliched: H.G. Wells travels to the present to capture Jack the Ripper; but the actual story is so good that you don't really notice. The story is actually rather Whovian (or, for you laymen, like the TV show "Doctor Who," which isn't just a show, but a religion to some.), in fact, there are several moments where almost expect to hear the loud, high-pitched noise indicating a cliffhanger, like when Mary Steenburgen is hiding in the closet, and Jack is about to look in there.
This show, like I've said, is very much like "Doctor Who," except with better effects, although you only see them when he's jumping around in time, and when he defeats Jack.
If you like this movie, and you've never seen "Doctor Who," get a tape, or find it on public television, of course, with video, you'd be able to choose what Doctor you like. My preference is the fourth one, Tom Baker.
As I've made blatantly clear, "Doctor Who" fans will love this movie. Malcolm McDowell as H.G. Wells is a lot like the fifth Doctor, Peter Davison, with shades of Tom Baker. Also if you're a fan Malcolm McDowell or David Warner, like me, this is a good one.
In this imaginative, entertaining and suspenseful tale, Jack The Ripper (David Warner) commandeers the time machine invented by his former friend H.G....More at Buy.com Marketplaces
