You've all seen this movie, so let's cut to the chase. Top Gun was the most "American" movie made in the 1980's and still is tops among pure action movies. American pilots flipping the bird at the best Russia has to offer. A heroic love story that pulls at the heart strings and shows hot steamy sex. A soundtrack with every memorable song from 1986 including the Top Gun Anthem, which still sends chills up my spine. It is no wonder that Top Gun is the DVD you always see playing in the home theater demonstrations at electronics stores. It was the movie that defined a decade, and the standard to which I would compare all action movies to follow.
My testosterone races throughout the entire movie. Maverick races F-16's on his motorcycle. Ripped men play beach volleyball (which by the way didn't hurt the up and coming sport of beach volleyball in the late 80's and early 90's). The most amazing cinematography of F-16's in battle paste you to the back of your seat as MIG's whistle by your ear. Tom Cruise breaks all the rules. There is never a dull moment, or a lull in the feed of visual steroids when you watch this movie.
Top Gun was the mold that Tom Cruise's career was cast from. The guy with it all plus an ego, who has one weakness, and overcomes it in the end to get the girl. Take a look at Cocktail, Days of Thunder, Jerry Maguire, The Firm, and on and on to see what I am talking about. And this is why, from the first time I saw Top Gun, I have worshipped Tom Cruise and the movies he makes. "I've got the need...the need...for speed", "Talk to me Goose", "We're too close for missiles, switch to guns", these were the "Show me the Money" lines of my childhood, and really defined the macho adrenaline trip that this movie takes you on.
Buy a home theater system just to watch this movie. Then go buy the soundtrack and blow the doors off your subwoofers with the Top Gun Anthem. Then, go buy every Tom Cruise movie that came out after Top Gun, and watch them. Many will say this would make them sick. I, on the other hand would be in for 24 hours of the most pure, riveting American entertainment there is.
