I'm surpised no one has rated this movie, its an astounding piece of film making. Triumph of the Spirit is a heart wrenching, detestable true story of a 1939 death camp in Germany. The main character played by Willem Dafoe is a strong spirited Jewish boxing champion that uses his boxing skills for meager advantages we often take for granted. For instance, his first bout was fought with no rounds and the winner was the last one standing. The undefeated Willem Dafoe was rewarded with a large cylinder loaf of bread which happened to be his only good meal of the day. The victory was short lived because he was bribed out of half of his loaf and had he decided to share the rest with his fellow prisoners.
The movie also has touching, up close and personal insights into the hard ships and struggles the Jewish family endured during the Holocaust. The director also managed to add a moving, romantic relationship between Willem Dafoe and the character played by actress Wendy Gazelle. The acting was superb, Robert Loggia was pitifully vibrant. And Edward James Olmos also gave brilliant performance. Rent this film! It's as good as Schindler's List.
