Plot Details: This opinion reveals major details about the movie's plot.
Last night was the first time I ever saw one of these "spaghetti" westerns, and I am dying. I really thought that I would be seeing something that was beyond cheesey (think Attack of the Killer Tomatos) and that I would probably fall asleep. Well, once again, my little prejudices have bitten me on the hiney. I not only enjoyed the movie, but I think I want to see more of the same genre!
The basic notion of this movie is that the "loner" finds a damsel in distress, helps her, and during the course of the adventure, they learn about themselves. Some minor romance, high drama, comedy and the requisite gun shooting and nifty one liners. OK, there were some really lousy special effects, and some of the camera work was enough to make me dizzy, but on the whole, it was good.
No doubt, it's my age, but I have always thought of Clint Eastwood as the stone faced guy with an orangutan sidekick. In this movie, he has a much broader range of expression than I thought he was capable of. Shirley Maclaine comes across as being capable and funny, and focused. The flighty woman that I have seen in many movies is not evident. Together, they created a terrific team of outlaws, on the side of right.
So, to any one I might have offended in the past, with my narrow view of the "spaghetti" western, I apologize. And I cheerfully eat my words. Can I get some garlic bread with that, too?
