If you have a heart for the stars and stripes, and share that same heart for the pleas of those who live in the rest of the world, then watch The Ugly American!
Ugly American is an oxy-moron, considering that the world's most beautiful actor, Marlon Brando stars in it. Set in post-Pearl Harbor Sarkan, as Ambassador Harrison Carter Macwhite, Brando is swift, cool and sporting a thin mustache that gives him the political, sharp look of an American who means business. Deep down, he is a loving husband, a nostalgic patriot and emotional about his tug of war between defending America's position in Sarkan while the entire country and communists within, fights them tooth and nail as they set out to build the "Freedom Road".
Macwhite's biggest challenge faces him in the form of his 15 year old friendship with charismatic and dangerously dynamic advocate Deong (played by the forceful Eiji Okada) who welcomes him into his home, has some drinks, and reveals to Mac that he is behind all of the rebellion, and does not want America's military power in Sarkan and will lead his people to the death to keep America and their influence out of his country. There is a showdown that shatters their friendship when Deong and Mac circle one another like lions on Deong's dock in a very powerful and heart-wrenching confrontation.
This movie is very well acted, with long scenes that take time to bring you into the story and fall in love with the characters. There is enough tension and forward dialogue that it is impossible to lose interest. It is in a beautiful location, a great cast, and many surprises. This is not one of the movies that Brando is remembered for, but it should be. It has a powerful message, and is jaw dropping in most scenes. The fact that was made in 1963 shows how advanced Marlon was in his day.
Brando is spectacular, and his co-star is equally powerful as his rival and friend. You feel the pain of both sides of the story thanks to these wonderful actors who put in 150%. Brando's sister, Jocelyn, cameos as a nurse, Emma, at an orphanage, and Sandra Church adds depth as Mac's supportive wife, Marion. Many other push and pull characters add layer to this dramatic, culture fest.
On a personal note, I was in awe of the performances, and while the story itself is not something I can relate to, I found it to be very inspiring around this 4th of July, seeing as we are ready to vote our new President in come November. This movie will stand the test of time! I rented it from Netflix and have held onto it for about a month. Sadly, I am sending it back with every intention of buying a copy of my own!!
