In the viewing of "Watership Down" which was the followup to my having read the book, this is much more than a children's story book. This is so much a story of a family and of personal struggles. It is a story of living, moving on, and surviving in the world.
The underlying message that is far deeper than "rabbits" in the woods and what they are up against as their lives are challenged in the forest...we all see what personal challenges people and families face in life.
An excellent allegory to tell the tale of strength and courage and believing and hanging in together as a family unit and the strength of the group vs.the individual.
Recommend that the children read the book and see the movie.
Also recommend that they then reread the book and see the movie as teens and see the "other" more global message that is there just below the surface of this great story and great movie.
A story about rabbits and surviving in the forest with a real message!!!
