Incredible! (Reply to this comment)
by atlantadude
This is the story of a has-been child star who, through years of servitude to her crippled sister and worsening alcohol abuse, turns into a single-minded tornado bent on returning to the stage to recapture her youthful success.
The movie is just about perfect in its choice of actors and in the superb camera shots. Although Baby Jane, as an adult, is a frightening mix of Shirley Temple curls and calcimined face powder, the viewer can only somewhat sympathize with her, serving her crippled sister, Blanche, three meals a day, endlessly climbing the staircase whenever the most annoying buzzer on the face of the earth is repeatedly rung for attention.
The movie takes us down the dark recesses of an alcoholic's mind to a point where there is no reality except as that person's mind sees it. The movie is full of creepy scenes and ultimately takes us to where Jane is hopelessly simple-minded and unable to recognize today from yesterday.
This is a don't miss movie - watch it again and again to see the hidden treasures the camera work give us.

Of a GREAT classic film.
I had SUCH a crush on Bet. Davis when I was a kid and was devestated when I found out that she was old enough to be my grand mother. ;)
Great review.

Enjoyed your review of one of the scariest movies ever....the scene where Bette Davis serves Joan Crawford the "famous dinner"still makes my skin crawl....

I have a tape series... (Reply to this comment)

...that a friend loaned me. It is by a woman and is very interesting. I heard an interview with this woman and was surprised to hear that it was Bette Davis' daughter!
She is a really interesting woman and has a good head on her shoulders from what I hear her say on the tapes.
Your review made me think of that!

If only I was not too scared to rent this to see again, been too long since I last saw this.
I think I will start by looking for Mommie Dearest since I like that one too.
Great review! They do not make them like this anymore, what a shame.

I love this movie, though it's maddening to watch Blanche fail in her struggle to escape from Jane. Great review!
