Dear Nick,
Once again you are very kind to suggest that is you who are the ignoramus when the evidence clearly supports my claim to that title.
The director was George Stevens, who deserves the credit you've so generously directed me to give him.
Thanks.
Best wishes,
Peter

...and effective film direction that takes the actors' attributes and personalities into account:
"He starts by taking in the contours of her legs and then glides his eyes appreciatively up to her smiling face. She's taller than he is so she does the reverse and looks him over from his smiling face down."
Which raises my ignoramus question. Who directed it?
Excellent post.

"far less sexist than those awful Radio Shack commercials on television in which macho Howie Long always has the upper hand over perky Terry Hatcher"
I don't think that I can bear to watch the film again to be sure that my memory of Hepburn being scorned and ground down is overstated. I'm more likely to read Travels with Charley first, but if I get around to the latter, perhaps I'll do both back-to-back to check for possible special pleading?
