Barbra Streisand is well known not only for her perfectionism but also for her achievements. In a time when musicals where not as popular as in the 1950's or 1960's, Yentl broke that barrier, and proved to be a "door opener" to all women directors in the film industry. I believe this film is one of Streisand's best achievements. Every aspect of it was taken so seriously (cinematography, sound, make-up, costumes, music...THE MUSIC!) and the attention paid to all the details is so evident one assures that love of movie making was present all the time. No wonder why "Time" magazine heralded it as one of the ten best films of 1983. Taking into consideration that this was a directorial debut astonishes me, because you feel as if this was her tenth directorial effort. To me the film is more like a well defined and coordinated "dance" just watch the dinner scene when "Yentl" disguised as "Anshel" visits "Haddass's" house for the first time. Everyone in the film acted gloriously and the voice...my God..that voice! sounds like "mercury poured over a block of ice". This film is definitely one you should own.
