"Yentl" was the directing debut for Streisand. This was a wonderful performance by her both in front and behind the camera. Streisand is Yentl, a young woman who wants to study the Jewish Talmud more than anything. Unfortunately, this was forbidden to young woman in the early 1900's. Yentl's father dies, and she decides to follow her dream of becoming educated and a scholar. Yentl cuts her hair and takes the name of Anchel. Anchel head to the city to study the Talmud. Yentl befriends Avigdor, portrayed by Mandy Patinkin. Through a strange tradition and twist of fate, Avigdor is forbidden to marry his love, Hadass, portrayed by Amy Irving. Avigdor convinces Anchel to marry Hadass. Streisand falls deeply in love with Avigdor and realizes that she must confess her true self to Avigdor. She does but Avigdor cannot accept the betrayal of Anchel and still loves Hadass. Avigdor will return to Hadass and Yentl revealed leaves for America, where she can learn and study and be free.
This was a wonderful film, but the music and vocal performances from Streisand are the real stars of the show! These are some of the best songs that I have heard from Streisand. They are all beautiful songs. "Papa Can you Hear Me" and "The way He Makes Me Feel" are real show stoppers.
If you like sweet stories and fabulous musicals, this is the film for you. The Finale is nothing short of spectacular!
