Plot Details: This opinion reveals major details about the movie's plot.
Iv always had a soft spot for Dolph Lundgren movies. It's probably because Masters of the Universe was the first movie I ever saw at a cinema. It's always quite disapointed me that he never got to be a very big action star,he made some stupid choices of movies to star in.Thankfully this isnt one of them.
One stupid choice that was associated with the movie was its titles.Yes,both its UK title Dark Angel and the one this review comes under. I Come in Peace makes sense, after all it is the only line Matthias Hues character says, but it's a crap title for a film. Can you picture yourself going up to the ticket seller in a cinema "two for I come in Peace please".No.If you are in a video store and see the side of a box reading I Come in Peace, your average viewer wont even look at it(the 18 rating and ludicrous nature of the title would probably make them think it was a porn film).Dark Angel sounds cool, but makes very little sense.Unless it is supposed to be the good alien who wears all black(although for that matter Dolph sticks to dark colours here as well)
However, the movie itself is nice. The plot goes a little something like this:
Jack Caine(Dolph Lundgren - Red Scorpion) is a cop out to take down a wealthy drug dealing gang known as the Whiteboys. The whiteboys have stolen a large quantity of Heroin from a police warehouse, and in an attempt at an undercover operation, Jack's partner is killed. The heroin goes missing from the scene, and several white boys are found dead, their throats slit with a mysterious razor sharp device, fired from the wrist of a towering, albino Alien (Matthias Hues - Kickboxer 2).
Caine is paired - against his will, with FBI agent Smith (Brian Benben - Gangsters War) to solve the case.
Meanwhile the alien is using the stolen heroin to overdose innocent people, as this stimulates a part of the brain that he is harvesting for use as a drug on his home planet,in pursuit is an alien police officer (Jay Bilas in his only starring role). The FBI want to cover this up and make a deal with the White Alien for arms, but Jack Caine, and his outer space counterpart want him dead, but Jack also has to contend with the whiteboys, who blame him for the death of their men.
This probably sounds incredibly stupid, and it is.But it works. The fight scenes work well, the shootouts are well done and the explosions are nice.
For 1990,the special effects all work very nicely, none of the performances are below average and it is a very entertaining movie. So where did it go wrong? apart from the title, I really do not know.Possibly because there were so many Sci-Fi/Action movies in the late 80s/early90s that it just got overlooked, because it is better than most of the garbage Arnie and Stallone have starred in that has made big money.
There are only really a couple of niggles I have with the movie.
The first is that the two aliens have the same gun,yet one shot from white gives black a fatal wound, yet white is shot with black's gun repeatedly, and isnt harmed in the least.
Another is how the two aliens got to Earth. We never see any evidence of spaceships or such.
Finally, the last thing may just have been me, but Im sure Dolph's hair changed from jet black to black with blonde showing back and forth.Like I say, this may just have been me.
There really isnt anything else I can say about the movie. It's incredibly fun, providing you arent someone who believes every movie should be an epic and have some deep and meaningful cause(altough this does kind of carry a 'Dont deal drugs' message),its a very entertaining action picture.I wish they would hurry up and put it on DVD, as the VHS is long deleted, and it is one of Dolph's best(it deserved DVD treatment before flippin Sweepers thats for sure)
