In relation to Australia being behind Europe in the airing of Salo, I do recall that this movie was shown to full houses at one of the alternative cinemas in Sydney in the early nineties until the resulting furore closed it down.

... as being intrigued by your description of another movie that wouldn't be found floating face down in the mainstream...

... guess i'll have to add this one to the list of others such as Takashi Miike's Audition that i'll need to ferret out... thanks Mike! ...t-žoo

Mike,

Thanks for the comments--someone should make Falwell watch Salo...it might make him appreciate the humanity of the people in this country a little more than he does now.

Good luck finding a copy--this is a really rare film. It's well worth finding, though--everyone should see it at least once in my opinion.

While the Marquis himself isn't featured in the story, Salo does indeed make Quills look like a Disney film.

Amazing review (Reply to this comment)

Think Jerry Falwell would like this film? I'd like to send a copy to the a*shole for his recent comments re the terroristic act causes. This film much make the recent M. de Sade with G. Rush look like a Disney movie but it sounds fascinating. I seriously doubt if my local Blockbusters carries it but you have made me want to see it. On a much milder scale, Clockwork Orange was totally misunderstood. Kubrick was not glorifying violence but showing the evils of Right Wing responses. Thank you for an excellent review.

Heidi,

Glad that you found the review useful.

Whenever someone asks me what I think is the most disturbing or horrifying film i've ever seen, this one is always right around the top of the list--primarily for the reasons you've mentioned.

I did see Salo here in America, but on laserdisc. I've heard stories about sold out theaters having less than 12 people in them once the final credits roll, though. It's definitely a tough film to sit through.

Thanks for your comments.

Over the Moon... (Reply to this comment)

An Ozzie expression for 'Gobsmacked' - allow me to explain. I saw this movie in Geneva back in 1987 - it had been banned in Switzerland for, I think, 15 years. I had to see it. I saw it. I shall never forget it. Why your review is so important to me is that I had to spend time reading the subtitles (in French, translated from the Italian) which meant I missed a lot of the action because I was trying to understand de Sade's 'rationale' as it were. Your review has effectively patched up the gaps in my understanding. Let's face it, who could sit through it a second time, just to make sure they'd understood all the subtitles!

If anyone were to ask me "What film has horrified/impressed you the most?" it would have to be this one, not so much because of the acts it portrays but, I guess, the idea that once a man has power over another, total power that is, he can do whatever he likes. Commit acts of evil with total impunity, and in the process dispense with things like dignity, greatness, humanity, (as the Fascists/Nazis did) all in the name of reaching that bigger and better orgasm (be it sexual, power, whatever).

It's amazing, and what guts Pasolini had to bring it to us! Only the Italians could do something like this. Even the French would cringe, I suspect.

By the way, I suppose you didn't see it in the States or Australia did you? Over here, we are so far behind Europe, I don't think they will ever show it, because people are too preoccupied with the surface aspect, rather than the deeper message. As you say, not for everyone, but I'm glad I saw it.

Thanks again for a truly wonderful review! With heartfelt thanks. Heidi.
