It has nothing to do with operatic excess. It's a question of a meaningful plot. In Il Trovatore, there are characters to care about. What's the point of featuring revenge as the grand climax if the character taking revenge is no better than the one getting his comeuppance? Most operas have at least one sympathetic main character. It's a question of a competent script or libretto.
I'm surprised you haven't mentioned Wings of Desire lately.

so superior to "M. Hire!. I'd think that Visconti is too operatic for you, but you loved "Horseman on the Roof" (and "Cyrano"--maybe it's that you like operatic excess only when it's in French?)
