Plot Details: This opinion reveals minor details about the movie's plot.
An excellent black comedy from Scorsese, unlike anything else he has ever done. Many critics dismissed it as trivial and shallow, but I thought it was a mesmerizing little movie about an average night which turns into a pure nightmare.
What Griffin Dunne's character goes through is riveting to watch, but he doesn't enjoy it quite as much as us. What begins as a casually arranged date leads from one odd and eerily co-incidental event to another, as Dunne encounters a series of very weird women (and one or two men).
Capped by a truly surreal ending, this is one of those films that plays like a dream that you wish you'd had. There are some lovely little touches of pathos which somehow manage to keep the story grounded, such as the scene where Dunne hasn't quite got enough change for the last train home, or the all-night bar where he just wants to sit and collect his thoughts.
Although Dunne goes through an incredibly weird night, there's a strange sort of realism to it, because what else is a city, if it's not one big collection of oddballs jostling in and out of each other's lives?
