Toxic Avenger 2

Written: Jun 25, 2012 (Updated Jun 25, 2012)
Rated a Very Helpful Review by the Epinions community
Pros:First twenty minutes is great
Cons:Becomes a dull travel movie fast
The Bottom Line: 4.5/10

Plot Details: This opinion reveals major details about the movie's plot.

Toxic Avenger 2 seems to regard the same character from the prior film, but he sure talks a lot more, the tone is a lot less serious, the concept is stupid, and only the introduction is genuinely funny. The grade-school writing is nothing new for Troma but in this case it feels like it demographics itself toward grade school kids in all honesty. The film itself would not be so bad if it actually picked something of, I don't know, interest to center around. The Toxic Avenger is permanently deformed by Toxic Waste. Unlike most superheroes, this is not an alter ego, he's just a deformed man. The movie goes straight for comedy 100% of the time which is actually worse because it seems to not do much of anything with that comedy. There is a lot less gore, there are still tits and nudity, a few bits of music seems to replace the drama of the other film. There is so much slapstick, some funny, some bad, but overall it just doesn't work to the extent that it should.

The case with this film's plot is that at first it doesn't know what it's doing, and then it takes off in a random direction. The first twenty minutes is a clown car of villains including midgets, the KKK, jews and more. None of this has anything to do with the rest of the film but the high slapstick of arm ripping and turning heads into basketballs is the most entertaining thing in the film. The writing in this movie is pretty bad. For whatever scientific reason The Toxic Avenger is what he is, the scientific explanation was unneccessary and stupid. The entire film after the first scene is him on a roadtrip to Japan to find his father. There is a lot of action, but it goes nowhere. I don't even know what the plot is trying to do. When he finally meets his father, he's Asian, which explains nothing because he himself wasn't at all Asian in the first film and didn't look even part Asian. His father, of course, is the villain, and we've got the Star Wars-y theme going, though there's no big reveal here, he just sort of finds it out.

The movie is a lot of noise, screaming, bad music cues, bad acting, plenty of terrible costumes, breasts, and the natural idiotic writing. It's not bad because it's poorly written, it's bad because unlike the first film it's just not engaging. It could be a lot better written, a lot funnier, a lot darker, a lot more of anything, instead the majority of the film just feels like a waste of time. The budget may be bigger but the film feels a whole lot smaller, with cheaper effects and a poorer production. I say just avoid it unless you're really looking for a bad movie and are out of better ones to watch. I mean, ok, the Toxic Avenger isn't really explored as a character, though his father's backstory is OK, but most of the exposition that puts him in these sequences is a joke. The bad martial arts and bad topical humor abound, and since it all centers around Japan it's not really funny. I don't understand why the film sent him to Japan. There's no real reason to. The Simpsons didn't go to Japan until like episode 200, Japan jokes are not inherantly funny, and their quirky culture isn't a source of rife comedy here. There are the generic love interests and everything else you'd expect, but it's irrelevant. This movie is for the most part boring.
