This is the most priceless gem of a movie I possess in my growing collection of VHS videos. Career Opportunities is full of everything to make a comedy entertaining. This movie is hard to find but well worth the trouble of tracking it down.
Story
Twenty-one year-old Jim Dodge (Frank Whaley), the town liar, just got fired from one of his many different jobs he has had. Since he lives at home but still pays rent, he must get another job, or his father is shipping him out to St. Louis. He quickly finds a job working as "night clean up boy" for the local Target department store. Unfortunately for this always-talking, people person, his job means working alone--all night long.
Josie McClellan (Jennifer Connelly) is the beautiful daughter of the town's richest citizen. With her mother and brother deceased, her and her father don't get along well at all. Upset that her father controls her life but too scared of what might happen if she leaves him, she finds herself in Target just before closing time debating if she wants to humiliate him by stealing some merchandise.
After being bored out of his mind with nearly all of work done, Jim Dodge finds himself roller-skating around in bovine boxers, a white shirt, and a bridal cap on. Much to his surprise, the beautiful Josie McClellan is in the middle of the store watching him. Locked in the store together, the two learn more about themselves and what they want out of life then they could have possibly figured out on their own. The two opposites realize they have more in common than they would have ever known. Their night is abruptly interrupted by two burglars hoping to rob the store. So, now Jim and Josie must deal with the criminals and survive to start their new lives far away from their old lives.
Furthermore
The story is interesting in itself, but in addition to such a wonderful story, the script is perfect. Comedy will never be better than this movie. You will get a workout because you laughed so hard from this movie. On top of the script, Frank Whaley is excellent as a fast-talking town liar. Even better than Whaley is Jennifer Connelly who performs as if the script were custom made to fit her.
