Well, both of my parents are from the South; North Carolina and Georgia, and I spent some time living in Columbus, GA. So I am not unaware of the dynamics between the two groups of peoples...

Great job and terrific review of a phenomenal movie. One question: Are YOU sure YOU are not a Southerner? You know this story almost as well as we do, here... and we lived it, first hand. Thanks for such bitter-sweet memories,

I especially appreciated your definitions at the very beginning describing the "seperate but equal" and "Jim Crow " laws. Well done!!

Two Other Cases (Reply to this comment)

That were of primary concern during this period, which assisted in turning back gains made by african americans were US vs. Reese, which held that the Enforcement Act of 1870 covered more offenses than were punishable under the terms of the 15th amendment, and US vs Cruikshank, which held that the 15th amendment did not guarantee black citizens the right to vote...only the right not to be discriminated against.

Oddly, it was the Democrats that seized power back in the South, that cause the shift in policy. The Republicans had lost their zeal for civil rights, following the Civil War and Radical Reconstruction, and did little to stem this trend. However, it was still the Democrats that sought to hold the African American back. It seems odd that they reinvented the party in the 1950's and claimed to stand for Civil Rights. However, with the Republican Party reaching out to minority voters in the current election, I have heard many remarks about their insincerity. It seems strange to me that so many people are unwilling to accept the party's invitation.

Anyway, Democrat or Republican, we ARE making progress. Maybe we aren't there yet. But we are making progress. With the continual merging of ideas between the two major parties, it won't be long before the candidates stand for basically the same principles. The differences are very slim right now. However, I disagree with you when you state that George Bush does not have the integrity to lead this country. Touche.

We could all use a lesson in equality (Reply to this comment)

Very well written. I seem to remember seeing this movie from your description of it, however, I think I'm going to rent it again. Even in this day and age, I think everyone needs to make a constant effort to end all discrimination so maybe one day the U.S. will actually be 100% equal.
