This movie is a guilty pleasure. It has no real substance and there is no lesson to learn in life (well, I think they may attempt to want you to, but really, it's lost in everything else going on). When you need something that will make you laugh and feel good, this is a good movie to watch.
Plot and Analysis
Michael J. Fox's character, drives cross country. His destination: Beverly Hills. The reason for going there? He's interviewing for THE position at a plastics surgery practice. His youth and impatience (and I would argue, his testosterone level) veer him off his highway course (construction, traffic and all) to country back roads. He becomes distracted by a crossing cow and ends up destroying a judge's fence. His sentence? He has to perform community service in their town of Grady, South Carolina. They only have one Dr. and they sure could use the help.
What makes this story good and humorous is how Michael J. Fox interacts with the various, stereotypical members of the community. Doc Hollywood (as he is nicknamed by the community) has certain expectations. For instance, when a pregnant couple come to see him, he orders the woman up on the table. After he encounters blank stares from them, it turns out that they came to see him because they received a letter from their cousin. Someone needs to read it! (And by the way, the content of those letters are hilarious.)
There's the annoying nurse who clocks him in and out. Ching! Ching! Watch the hairs on his neck stand up!
Woody Harrelson's character - the standard town hick who thinks he is all that. Can I sell you some insurance while I'm chewin' my tobacco?
Bridget Fonda's character - town sleeze and daughter of the mayor. What does she want? For the good Dr. to whisk her away from this place.
Julie Warner's character - intelligent, pretty, previously burnt by a big city guy, who doesn't want anything to do with Dr. Feelgood :).
There's a special cameo by George Hamilton. He's as scary looking as ever!
You learn a lot about Michael J. Fox's character - how he grew up and why he took the direction that he took. Love ensues between Michael and Julie and we get to see him make some life-altering decisions.
With a typical Dr.'s ego, Michael J. Fox plays the part to the hilt. Really, you wonder if any door is big enough for his head to fit through.
Julie Warner was the strongest actor of the bunch however, everyone gave very solid performances.
DVD Features
None! Really! The only reason to have this on DVD is if you like the movie, and you're trying to only buy DVD's. And the kicker is that there is usually only a few cents difference in the price between the DVD and VHS version.

If you're a Michael J. Fox fan, it's imperative that you at least check out the first two Back to the Future's. A little bit more of a cheesier romantic comedy of his is The Secret of My Success. It's fine but not as good as this movie.
Other romantic comedies I would recommend include: When Harry Met Sally, My Cousin Vinny, and Pretty Woman.
