Plot Details: This opinion reveals minor details about the movie's plot.
Despite some of the glaring reviews Showdown in Little Tokyo has gotten on this site, it's one of my favorite movies to watch. Since Rocky IV, I have been somewhat of a Dolph Lundgren fan. Unfortunately Dolph has spent most of his acting career involved with low budget, low rate action films. This is a fairly older film, so some people may not have even heard of it. If you are action movie fan looking for a good movie with plenty of laughs to kick back with on a Friday night, then Showdown In Little Tokyo is perfect.
Dolph Lundgren of course plays the staring role as LAPD Cop/Samurai Warrior Detective Kenner, who is trying to clean up the Japanese gang activity in LA. Kenner grew up in Japan with his parents(his father was an MP in Japan) and witnessed their murder by the hands of a warrior in the Yakuza clan. Kenner was raised in Japan and was taught the language and fighting ways of the samurai, before he came to America.
Brandon Lee plays Kenner's partner in the film. Lee brings classic humor and a smart assed attitude into the mix of an otherwise serious action movie. His well timed one-liners are priceless at certain parts of the movie. He also exhibits some of his talented martial arts abilities throughout this film. Initially Kenner does not think they will get along, but throughout the film they become closer and eventually become a two-man butt kicking team.
The plot behind Showdown in Little Tokyo is quite simple. Kenner is seeking revenge for his parents murder, but Lee's character is able to convince him to "do it the right way" by bringing the murdered to justice. The two exchange verbal barbs and deal out plenty of punishment. Kenner tracks his parents murderer through LA and uncovers a Japanese drug smuggling ring in the process. The Yakuza clan attempts to take over the Japanese area in LA and there is a climactic final showdown between Kenner and his parents murderer.
Of course, as with most low-budget action films, the acting leaves something to be desired. However, this is still an excellent action film that incorporates a good bit of humor to keep it moving along. Lee and Lundgren have a good chemistry together and feed off of eachothers strengths throughout the film. The plot of the movie is very interesting and actually makes sense which is a bonus for most action films.
I don't want to spoil too much of the film, but there are some excellent fighting scenes throughout. The film also features an excellent soundtrack with your typical kung-fu style beats throughout. This film is rated R, as there is quite a bit of vulgar language and nudity. This is not a movie for your 12 year old. I've found that this movie is a great film to watch whenever you are bored and need something fast paced with a little bit of humor. Also if you are a fan of Dolph Lundgren and of low budget action films you will enjoy this movie.
I purchased Showdown In Little Tokyo on DVD for $5.99 out of one of the cheap DVD bins at Walmart. I know that Ebay also has a few copies every once in awhile if you would like to check out this film. There aren't any special features on the DVD other than scene selections, just pop it in and it plays. I hope you enjoy this review and as always I welcome any comments or suggestions.
