Vivien Leigh does not sexually assault Lee Marvin. She knocks him around while he is drunk, after he recoils from her, having wandered intoxicated into the wrong cabin. Her fury is at the insult of being rejected after having surrendered to someone so unsuitable.

Leigh and Signoret are reason enough to see the film. Would that both of them had made more films than they did! As you suggest the elements don't come toegether into a comprehensible whole.
