When this movie came out back in '91 or '92 it almost changed my life forever. I was skiing and racing on the NCAA Div 1 circuit about 70-80 days a season but getting totally burnt out on running gates. So when I saw this movie I started *seriously* thinking about becoming an extreme skiing junky after I graduated. While I decided not to pursue that dream, many friends of mine *did* follow their dreams and are making a viable career out of it. Kudos to all my friends as I live vicariously through them.
So what is with this movie? With the backdrop of the Gulf War, Greg Stump produced a movie beyond just hucking off of cliffs, but a masterpiece that touched upon the real soul of skiing to me. Incredible skiing footage includes: Scott Schmidt and a boarder named Dano in the Chugach Range in AK, free skiing in Chamonix, Dave McCoy skiing on his home turf in Mammoth, Jimbo Morgan doing some speed skiing in Les Arcs, some world cup downhill footage, some world cup moguls footage, an early boarder cross competition, etc. In addition to the skiing footage, Greg Stump also throws in some windsurfing and surfing footages from Maui. Also sprinkled in are candid interviews with many of the featured skiers. The video also has a soundtrack with many songs from Seal, Ice-T, Doors, Hoodlum Priest, and numerous references to the movie Bladerunner.
Rather than going from one clip to another, Greg Stump seemed to weave all the footages and soundtracks seamlessly together. While watching the video it almost seems as if you are in dream... drifting in and out of the real world with the Gulf War and endless powder. Even though it is probably 75 minutes long, the video seems to fly by much faster... making you wish it would never end.
In summary, if you haven't seen this movie yet... go rent it. In my opinion it is Greg Stump's best work and the one that all the new school ski flick producers are trying to emulate.
