Boy, Nicholas Cage seems to be obsessed with Las Vegas, doesn't he? First there's this one "Honeymoon in Vegas" and then there's "Leaving Las Vegas", 2 films with totally different subject matters. But this review only focuses on "Honeymoon".
Nicholas Cage plays Jack Singer and Sarah Jessica Parker ("Sex and the City") plays his long time girlfriend, Betsy. Cage promises his mother on her deathbed that he will never get married. Problem No. 1.
Jack and Betsy go to Vegas to get married and run into James Caan who plays Tommy Korman, a big time Vegas gambler. Betsy looks like Tommy's dead wife, Donna, so Tommy arranges a "fixed" poker game with Jack. Jack ends up putting up a weekend with Betsy as collateral and loses. Problem No. 2.
Betsy agrees to this lame brain idea and ends up semi-falling for Tommy after Tommy lies to Betsy and tells her that Jack traded her for a $3,000 debt, when in truth it was a $65,000 debt. (Yeah, I guess getting pimped for only $3,000 is much worse than getting pimped for $65,000.)
Betsy, majorly p.o.'d at Jack, agrees to marry Tommy, but Jack realizes he loves her and wants to get married and then must get to Betsy before Tommy marries her.
The final scene with the "Flying Elvises" is incredible. Jack ends up in a plane with the parachuting Elvis impersonators and must jump out of the plane with the rest of the Elvises. Betsy has learned the truth by then, is now p.o.'d at Tommy for lying to her, and true love conquers all.
The final scene has Jack in his Elvis costume, marrying Betsy in her Vegas showgirl outfit (a disguise she used to hide from Tommy) getting married in Vegas.
Interesting movie if you're a James Caan, Nicholas Cage or S.J. Parker fan, but the plot's a bit unbelievable. The soundtrack, however, is killer. If you love Elvis, this soundtrack's for you. Actually, it's other artists covering Elvis songs. Of course, there's "Viva Las Vegas" performed by Bruce Springsteen. I actually like the soundtrack better than the movie, but it's fun to watch if only to see Cage dressed as Elvis and the Flying Elvis finale.
