Plot Details: This opinion reveals minor details about the movie''s plot.
This movie is so great that I don't know if there is enough that I can say about this one.
Plot
President Bill Mitchell is a typical politician. He looks after only those that are powerful and ignores most of the platforms that he got elected on. Unfortunately Bill has a stroke and falls into a coma. His Chief of Staff, Bob Alexander, decides that he doesn't want the Vice President running the country. That's where Dave comes in. Dave has performed a service for the President earlier on. Dave looks so much like the President that the Secret Service hired him to fill in for the President leaving a function. Bob Alexander calls Dave back into the White House and asks him to fill in for the President for a while. He asks him to pretend to be Bill Mitchell. For some reason Dave agrees. Bob thinks that he can control Dave, but that's where Bob is wrong. Dave realizes what's wrong with everything going on and sets out to fix it.
Acting
Kevin Kline plays Dave Kovic and President Mitchell so well that you won't remember him from anything else after you finish watching this movie. Dave is so wonderful that he will really endear himself to you by the end of the movie. Sigourney Weaver plays President Mitchell's wife Ellen. This is a long way from the Alien movies, but she does a really good job with this role. Bob Alexander is played by Frank Langella, and there is no better person for this role. They all do a great job with their respective characters. Here's a list of the main characters:
Kevin Kline ... Dave Kovic / Bill Mitchell
Sigourney Weaver ... Ellen Mitchell
Frank Langella ... Bob Alexander
Kevin Dunn ... Alan Reed
Ving Rhames ... Duane Stevenson
Ben Kingsley ... Vice-President Nance
Charles Grodin ... Murray Blum
Faith Prince ... Alice
Laura Linney ... Randi
Bonnie Hunt ... White House Tour Guide
Parley Baer ... Senate Majority Leader
Stefan Gierasch ... House Majority Leader
Anna Deavere Smith ... Mrs. Travis
Charles Hallahan ... Policeman
Tom Dugan ... Jerry
Details
This movie was made in 1993, but with the upcoming elections there is no better time to watch this film then now! It's a great film with a wonderful message. It is 110 minutes long and rated PG-13. It's one that you want to be careful with when showing to your teens as it does have a few scenes that might not be appropriate for them. This is one that you'll want to screen before letting your children watch.
Thoughts
I love watching this movie because Dave is such an ordinary guy. He's just like you and me. To see him suddenly thrust into the role of President is so very funny. But not only that it's got a great message. I wish someone like Dave were running for President at the upcoming election. He's just so ordinary that you fall in love with him. There are some great scenes in this one that will make you laugh, and then there are some where you'll want to cry with joy. This movie has it all, and I highly recommend it!
